Welcome to the Horace Farquhar Antique Photo Collection.

“Uncle Horace” as my grandmother called him, was a professional photographer who took many wonderful photos of my grandmother Gladys Bell Wolfe’s family as she was growing up in rural Mead, Nebraska during the early 1900’s. These treasured photos have provided rich visuals of Gladys's early life for her posterity.

I have recently discovered that Uncle Horace’s skills were not limited to Mead, Nebraska. He was also actively involved in photography in Fayette City, Pennsylvania and the surrounding area, and much of his original work was stored in the old Farquhar home in Perryopolis.

Found among his collection are glass plate negatives which preceded photographic film as a target medium in photography. A light-sensitive emulsion of silver salts was applied to a glass plate. This form of photographic material largely faded from the consumer market in the early years of the 20th century, as more convenient and less fragile films were introduced.

In Pennsylvania, those who knew Horace well, called him "Hod" He was a friendly sort of guy although he never married, giving his life over to artistic creation instead, whether it was the medium of photography or making violins. Among his treasured photo collection was one that Horace took of his own work room where he also made violins. He sold his violins in Fayette, PA.

Horace S. Farquhar death Notice and Obituary

Horace S. Farquhar, aged 84 of Perryopolis, R.D., died this morning at 2 o'clock at his home.
Mr. Farquhar was a member of the (Little Redstone) Methodist Church of Fayette City. He is survived by a brother, Allen Farquhar, of Perryopolis, R.D. Friends will be received at the Ira Blair and Sons Funeral Home in Perryopolis after 7 o'clock this evening.

Horace S. Farquhar, aged 84 of Perryopolis, R.D., died March 28 at 2 o'clock a.m. He is survived by a brother, Allen Farquhar of Perryopolis R. D. Friends are being received at the Ira Blair and Sons Funeral Home in Perryopolis where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 31 in charge of Rev. Harry W. Beveridge of the Fayette City Methodist Church, Interment will follow in the (Little) Redstone Cemetery, Ira Blair and Sons, Directors.
